Meet Rufus

On October 28th, 2006 we brought Rufus home to live with us. He is between 5 and 7 years old.

Rufus was left, without tags or history, at the overnight drop at a local shelter in January 2006. He was in bad shape, with skin infections, missing patches of fur, worms and ticks. He was also very skinny and had not been neutered. Rufus does not have the tattoos on his ears that would identify him as an ex-racer so there is no way to know his history.

Today, his fur is long (for a greyhound), shiny and soft. The only permanent remnants of his rough start in life are a spot on his ear where the fur hasn't grown back and a few inches missing from the end of his tail. Thanks to Kristen and the folks at Dog Camp in Driftwood, TX, for helping him rebound to his healthy, happy self.

Sophie is a wee bit jealous but she seems to have accepted Rufus into our home. She started playing with squeaky toys again, something she hasn't done in a long time. We've taken that as a sign that she's happy to have a companion.

Rufus prefers the sofa and beds to any of the many dog beds in our house. He likes to be close to us and his tail wags whenever we walk into the room.

We don't know his history. We do know he is a very sweet boy and he has quickly taken his place in our hearts.

UPDATE: We lost Rufus to cancer on March 15, 2008. See Chip's memorial for Rufus here.
